American Reality TV
Reality television is a type of programming which features original people instead of professional actors in supposedly unscripted humorous or dramatic situations. Such shows have existed since the beginning of television, but most often this term is applied to shows produced since 2000. Reality television is a global phenomenon, but right now is dominating American TV.
Allen Funt’s Candid Camera might be considered the first reality show since it showed people caught off guard in various awkward situations. Early game shows, such as Beat the Clock and Truth or Consequences engaged participants in wacky competitions. Ted Mack and Arthur Godfrey hosted talent competition shows. Talk shows starting with late night host Jack Paar in the 1950’s have expanded now to include morning, afternoon, and night.
Sports events are a sort-of reality television because events are unscripted. Sports merged with reality in shows such as The Big Break, The Contender, and The Ultimate Fighter. Even though there are unplanned moments in news shows, news is not considered "reality" television.
